Matthew Routley

Matthew started playing a brass instrument – a baritone – at the age of seven.

He received excellent tuition at school from Alun F. Williams (who is now Head of Gwent Music Support Service) and also excellent guidance and a wealth of experience from Eric Powell at Abergavenny Borough Band (whom Eric conducted from 1964 - 2007). Matthew moved from baritone onto Eb tuba at Abergavenny Borough Band when he was thirteen but as there were three Eb tuba players, Matthew didn’t play at contests. Eighteen months later a position arose on Bb Tuba and Matthew was asked to have a go on it and as they say the rest is history

He studied for a music degree at Huddersfield University from 1991 - 1994, where he was taught by the late Stuart Roebuck, formally of the Hallé Orchestra. Whilst at Huddersfield Matthew was invited to join Sellers Engineering Band by Philip McCann and had three happy years there.

In June 1995 Matthew joined Black Dyke and in all these years of playing at Black Dyke the highlights are too numerous to mention, but the most important thing after all this time is the thrill Matthew still feels when he puts on the famous red, black and gold jacket.

Matthew has relished the opportunities that have come his way to put something back into youth music. He is involved in several projects with aspiring youngsters from all over the country. He is currently the Tuba Tutor with the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain, the National Youth Brass Band of Wales and the Gwent Youth Brass Band. He thinks it’s great to see young brass players having fun whilst making music of the highest quality.
